A thin twisted cord is wound on a wooden spool fixed on a round iron stem with a bent handle. The stem is passed through iron ears on a wooden bar. The bar is rectangular, with corners cut off on one end. Two rectangular cavities are gouged in the bar, the spool with the cord being secured in one of them, and a piece of dying substance in the other. The Chinese used such cord line markers to apply marks when cutting or sawing logs in the construction of dwelling houses and other buildings.
