Annotation:

Jewish ethnographic expedition of S. A. An-sky. In the center: Wooden synagogue with a tall roof. Shtetl was a small town with a population of tradesmen and craftsmen, a major part of which was Jewish. In the Russian Empire, most of the shtetls were within the Pale of Settlement, “where the Jews were permitted to settle and reside.” According to the census of 1897, 33.5% of the Jewish population lived in 1522 shtetls of Russia. About 40% of their residents were engaged in commerce and mediation, and 35-40% were artisans.

פאתי העיירה היהודית. מחוז פודולסק, אוייזד פרוסקורובסקי, עיירה יהודית שרובקה. יהודים אירופאים. צלם - יודובין ס'.ב'. 1912-1914. תמונה מודפסת. בשנות 1912-1914 התקיימה המשלחת האתנוגרפית היהודית בראשות הסופר היהודי, הפולקלוריסט, האתנוגרף ואיש הציבור סימיון אנ-סקי (1863-1920). המשלחת סקרה מעל 70 ערים ועיירות בקצה הדרום-מערבי של האימפריה הרוסית (מחוזי ווהלין, פודולסק וקייב). במהלך המשלחת נרשמו אלפי מסורות, אגדות, סיפורים ושירי העם, נאספו יותר מ-700 חפצי חיי השגרה היהודיים וכלי הפולחן, יותר ממאה מסמכים ופנקי ההיסטוריה, נעשו 1,500 תצלומים. חומרי המשלחת שישו כבסיס לפתיחת המוזיאון היהודי בסנקט-פטרבורג - פטרוגרד - לנינגר אשר קיים עד סוף ה-1929. לאחר סגירתו של המוזיאון הועברו אוספיו לארגונים שונים בברית המועצות. במוזיאון האתנוגרפי הרוסי מאוחסנים יותר מ-400 פריטים ויותר מ-100 תצלומים שנאספו במהלך משלחת.
